Train to help your neighbors when emergencies happen.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program trains people to respond to emergencies in their own communities. CERT members can support first responders, give immediate help to victims, organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site, and take on non-emergency projects that make the community safer. The Lake Royale program follows the national CERT model promoted through Ready.gov.
CERT courses are taught locally by trained first responders and community members who have completed a CERT train-the-trainer course through the state emergency management training office or FEMA's Emergency Management Institute.
The concept was developed by the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1985 and expanded after the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake showed the need to train civilians. Thousands of CERT teams now operate across the country, and Lake Royale is one of many communities offering the training.
After a disaster, police, fire, and other services can be overwhelmed. Trained neighbors can make a real difference, and training helps volunteers help safely instead of becoming casualties themselves.
You can join as an Affiliated CERT Volunteer, who is not certified and is always paired with a certified member, or as a Certified CERT Member who has completed the 20-hour Basic CERT course.
